Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose opened the 2005 Calder Cup Playoffs on the road this past week, earning a split of two games at Mile One Stadium in St. John's, Newfoundland. The Moose saw a two-goal lead slip away on Wednesday but were able to rebound and win the game on a late third period powerplay goal by Lee Goren. Josh Green added an empty netter to make the final 5-3 Moose. On Friday, the Baby Leafs had their revenge, defeating Manitoba handily by a score of 6-1. Joel Kwiatkowski had three assists and Matt Stajan scored two goals to lead the way for St. John's. The series now shifts to the MTS Centre for games three, four and five on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. on all three nights.
MOOSE NOTES
Lee Lifts It Up a Notch On the Leafs: Manitoba Moose forward Lee Goren collected two goals and an assist in Wednesday's Game 1 victory by the Moose over the St. John's Maple Leafs, 5-3. That is the most points scored by a Moose in a playoff game since both Ryan Ready and Herbert Vasilijevs each collected a goal and two assists in Game 3 of the Qualifying Series vs. the Portland Pirates on April 13/03. The Moose franchise record for the most points in a playoff game is four owned by both Sean Pronger (2G,2A â 5/10/2001) & Steve Brule (2G,2A --5/15/2001).
Flats' Streak Ends: With Wednesday's 5- 3 win in Game 1 of the North Division Semi- Final, Manitoba Moose goalie Wade Flaherty captured his eighth straight playoff win dating back to the 2004 playoffs. The Terrace, BC native was named the MVP of the Calder Cup playoffs last year, winning 14 of the 16 starts he made in guiding the Milwaukee Admirals to the championship title. He won his last seven starts last year with Milwaukee. That streak came to an end with Friday's loss.
Moose AHL Road Show Continues: With a split of their first two road games of these Calder Cup Playoffs, the Manitoba Moose continued their postseason success on the road since joining the American Hockey League. The club has a record of 9- 7 in 16 games. Back in 2002-03, the Moose finished 6-3 in nine games away from the Winnipeg Arena. Overall, in 29 games dating back to the 1998 playoffs during the IHL days, Manitoba is 14-15 on the road with 67goals for and 85 goals against.
Turning Up the Heat a Notch: Friday's Game 2 of the North Division Semi-Final between the Manitoba Moose and St. John's Maple Leafs involved the most penalty minutes than any other game in Manitoba Moose playoff history. The Moose accumulated 85 minutes in penalties in Game 2. Their previous high was 62 penalty minutes back on May 5/01 in a 5-0 loss to the Chicago Wolves. The Maple Leafs compiled 63 minutes which means the two combined for 148 minutes in penalties â another Moose playoff record. The previous high for penalty minutes for two teams in one playoff game involving the Manitoba Moose was 131 minutes back on April 20/03 in a 1-0 loss to the Providence Bruins.
