Alexandria Beetles News Release

Duluth, MN - Ben Moore hit a three run home run in the second as the Alexandria Beetles (16-25, 3-3) scored seven runs in the first three innings and held on to defeat the Duluth Huskies (23-18, 4-3) by a 8-6 final on Tuesday night at Wade Stadium.

Moore's homerun was his team-leading seventh of the year and he added an RBI single in the first as well, part of a 3-5 night, as he raised his RBI total to 40 on the season in 41 games.

The Beetles jumped all over Duluth starter Evan Geist (3-4) with nine hits in the first two innings. Matt Lowenstein, Moore and Matt Beaty, continuing his torrid stretch, all singled in the first as a pair of runs scored.

Alexandria blew the game opened early in the second with six more hits, four consecutively to begin the inning, with Josh Carpenter singling in a run and Moore connecting on his three run shot to left one batter after Tanner Vavra, who entered the night leading the league in hitting, bounced into a 1-2-3 double play.

A solo shot from Robert Case in the third, his second in as many nights, put the Beetles up 7-0 in the third.

But a resilient Duluth side, entering the night second in the North Division, rallied against Beetle starter Jon Reed (3-1) in the third as four consecutive men reached with two outs to cut the deficit to 7-2, and with Husky reliever Jack English on the mound, the Beetles were held at bay in the middle innings.

Will Fulmer, who extended his on-base streak to 24 with a walk in the second, singled in the seventh inning and came around to score on a Case sacrifice fly for an insurance run that proved large in the seventh before Duluth made things interesting against the Alexandria bullpen.

In the eighth, a walk and three singles plated two runs and put runners on the corners with one out before Mitchell Babb worked out of further trouble as the lead was cut to 8-4, and in the ninth off Alex Guilford, Duluth pounded out three more hits to score two more runs with Trey Vavra grounding into a fielder's choice as the potential tying run to end the game.

The Beetles and Huskies will play the second of their five game set on Wednesday at 7:05 CDT in Alexandria.
