Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - The Shreveport-Bossier Captains have named Vince Moore as their 2011 field manager, replacing Ricky VanAsselberg. Moore, 39, has been the manager of the Edinburg (Texas) Roadrunners/Coyotes since 2005, although he also was temporarily on the Captains' coaching staff before the 2009 season before ultimately opting to return to Edinburg.
"I'm very excited," Moore said on Monday. "A lot of the [Captains] players I'm familiar with and it's very exciting to go there and get the chance to manage these guys. Coming to a championship team, what more could you ask for?"
Moore debuted as skipper of the now-defunct Central Baseball League's Edinburg Roadrunners in 2005, becoming the second manager in the club's history. He posted a 49-45 record and led his squad to its fifth consecutive post-season berth. Moore then became the first manager of the Edinburg Coyotes of United League Baseball in 2006 and led them to a 17-0 start during their inaugural season. The Coyotes then went on to put up the best regular season record in the league with 57-33 and played in the first United League Championship Series under Moore's leadership, ultimately falling to VanAsselberg's Alexandria Aces.
The Coyotes were once again re-named the Roadrunners in 2009, and Moore once again led them to the championship series in 2010.
Moore was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the fifth round of the 1991 Major League Baseball Draft. In 1993, he was sent to the San Diego Padres along with two other players for Fred McGriff. The former outfielder made it as high as double-A, in 1994 and 1996. He was a member of the California League-champion Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in 1993 He then went on to play for Edinburg, winning the Central League title in 2004 before retiring at the age of 32. In his career, Moore hit .249 with 71 homers and 422 RBI in 837 games.
"I know that we've hired a great manager in Vince Moore, who can win games and relate well with our players," said Captains General Manager Chet Carey. "I've gotten to know him over the years and I know he's the right man to lead us to another championship."
The 2010 American Association Champion Shreveport-Bossier Captains begin the defense of their title on Wednesday, May 11, against the Lincoln Saltdogs, at 10:05 a.m. For information on 2011 tickets, promotions, advertising, and other opportunities with the Captains, check out the Web site as well, or call the Fair Grounds Field office at (318) 636-5555.
