March 8, 2024 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
Washington Spirit News Release
Washington, D.C. - The Washington Spirit and Monumental Sports Network announced today that ten (10) Spirit matches will air on the regional sports network during the 2024 NWSL season. The first match available to fans on Monumental Sports Network will be the team's season opener on Sunday, March 17 as the Spirit take on Seattle Reign FC at 6 PM ET.
In total, the network's slate will feature six home and four away matches during the upcoming season, building off the nine-match schedule on the network last season. Monumental Sports Network is the exclusive local television media rights holder for the NHL's Washington Capitals, the NBA's Washington Wizards, and the WNBA's Washington Mystics, and also boasts a comprehensive schedule of live, local college and high school sports programming.
"We are ecstatic to feature Washington Spirit matches for the second consecutive year on our network," said Friday Abernethy, General Manager, Monumental Sports Network. "Between the Spirit and the Mystics, our network features live game broadcasts from two of the most prominent women's sports franchises in the DMV region, and we are so proud to provide a platform to showcase these world-class athletes and invest in making their games available to local sports fans."
Spirit matches on Monumental Sports Network will provide fans from Delaware to Richmond the opportunity to watch the world's top women's soccer players, including the five Spirit players who participated in the 2023 World Cup, from their homes or on-the-go devices.
"We are pleased to evolve our partnership with Monumental Sports Network this season," said Spirit CEO Kim Stone. "Airing our matches on Monumental will allow us to leverage their regional model to expand our reach and broaden our exposure throughout the area. This will give fans an additional opportunity to see some of the best athletes in the world."
Matches will be available to local fans both on linear tv and via streaming platforms within the network's footprint. Spirit fans can watch the games through their Pay TV subscription, on monumentalsportsnetwork.com, or by downloading the Monumental streaming app on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV and using an eligible TV Everywhere log-in.
For fans without a Pay TV subscription, in October, Monumental Sports Network unveiled direct-to-consumer (DTC) subscription memberships for viewers seeking to access Monumental Sports Network's live and on-demand programming. Fans can purchase monthly or annual memberships at monumentalsportsnetwork.com or by downloading the Monumental Sports Network app. In addition to the slate of Spirit games, subscribers also receive in-market access to live games for the Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics, amongst other live games, original programs, and tangible membership perks.
In August 2022, Monumental Sports & Entertainment acquired full ownership of NBC Sports Washington from Comcast/NBC Universal. The station was rebranded Monumental Sports Network in September 2023 with a new slate of programming. In November, Monumental Sports Network announced partnerships with several local universities to air 50 college basketball games on the network during the 2023-24 season, including 21 women's games and more than 20 games from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The network also broadcasts live college football, college volleyball, high school basketball, esports, and recently announced a slate of Major League Rugby games set to air this spring.
