Keene Swamp Bats News Release

KEENE, N.H. - Right fielder Mike Montville (Baldwinsville, NY/Le Moyne) went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run, two runs scored and four runs batted in to lead Sanford past the Keene Swamp Bats, 9-4, in New England Collegiate Baseball (NECBL) action on Tuesday night at Alumni Field in front of 1,743 fans.

The Mainers improve to 2-1 on the season. Keene falls to 2-1 overall.

Mainers' right-hander pitcher Nate Jones (Greenland, NH/Wake Forest) earned the win in his first appearance/start of the season going 5.1 innings, yielding just one hit, one run, three walks and two strikeouts. Swamp Bats' starter David Mahoney (Colchester, CT/UConn) was chased from the contest early lasting only one-and-two-thirds innings on six hits, six runs (all earned), three walks and one strikeout.

Sanford opened up the scoring in the top of the first as Montville executed a perfect hit-and-run with teammate Marlon Calbi (Montclair, NJ/Villanova) scoring him from second base on a single up the middle.

With the bases loaded, Matt Verrier (Norway, ME/Maine) pushed the Mainers ahead 3-0 notching a two-run double to deep center field plating Nick LaCroix (Grafton, MA/Franklin Pierce) and Montville.

The Swamp Bats defense escaped further damage as first baseman Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Georgia Tech) was gunned down at home plate trying to score from first. Keene centerfielder Brett DeLoach (Blackshear, GA/Georgia) rifled a throw to Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis, IN/Louisville) and the shortstop threw a strike to catcher David Lyon (Emporium, PA/Kent St.) to keep it a 3-0 score.

In the second with two runners on, Montville lifted his first homer of the season to centerfield giving the Mainers a 6-0 lead. Kronenfeld followed with a double to right center to chase Mahoney out of the game.

Relief pitcher TJ Ferguson (Westmoreland, NH/Franklin Pierce) held Sanford scoreless for the next three plus innings giving up zero hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

In the sixth after a leadoff walk by Lincoln Sanborn (Standish, ME/St. John's), Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, MA/UMass-Lowell) scorched a double to left field plating Sanborn from first base to make it 7-0. Kronenfeld added to the score with an RBI single to centerfield scoring Devlin from third.

The Swamp Bats finally got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth as left fielder Kevin Brown (Northborough, MA/Bryant Univ.) connected for a two-run home run to center field off of Sanford relief pitcher Ryan Leach (Farmingdale, ME/Franklin Pierce.) Jones was charged with one run on the two-run shot as he walked Esteban Gomez (Houston, TX/San Jacinto Coll.) before exiting the contest.

Chittended cut into the gap in the seventh inning with a bloop single to right field that brought Colby May (Guyton, GA/Georgia) home from second base. May reached earlier in the inning on a hit-by-pitch.

Toadvine collected Keene's only multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate and one run scored.

Keene returns to action tomorrow at home against the Holyoke Blue Sox with first pitch slated for 6:30 pm.
