Pair of Navigators Win Player, Pitcher of the Week

June 14, 2011 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release

Two sophomore Ivy League North Shore Navigators won the NECBL's Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on Saturday, June 11th.

NECBL Player of the Week, Columbia outfielder Dario Pizzano, had yet to make an out in his first two games. Pizzano had gotten on base by hit, walk or hit by pitch in his first seven plate appearances. He singled and walked in North Shore's 2-1 rain shortened loss to Holyoke on Opening Night, and followed it up by slamming two doubles and four RBI in North Shore's 12-1 win against Newport two nights later.

A two-time, first team all-Ivy League selection, Pizzano hit .359 with nine homers while leading Columbia in virtually every offensive category this season.

Strong consideration was also given to Vermont catcher/DH Mike Samela. The junior from Amherst hit .667 for the week and socked two homers in the Mountaineers' 9-4 win against North Adams. Samela led the Lord Jeffs this spring with a .383 batting average.

Dartmouth and North Shore lefty Michael Johnson was the winning pitcher in the aforementioned Newport game, earning NECBL Pitcher of the Week honors. He struck out seven in five shutout innings, yielding just three base runners. Johnson was 3-0 with a 4.39 ERA this season for the Big Green. He led Dartmouth with 12 appearances.
