Montreal Juniors Fall to Cape Breton, 6-2

After splitting the two game roadtrip with a win and a loss, the Montreal Juniors open up a two game homestand tonight against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

In the first period, the Screaming Eagles jumped out ahead on an odd man rush when center Stephen Horyl scored a shorthanded goal at 1:55 from defensemen Morgan Ellis and Francis Meilleur. The Juniors answered back when captain Nicolas Chouinard fired a heavy slapper past Olivier Roy's glove side at 6:56. Guillaume Belanger and Eliezer Sherbatov earned the assists. The Screaming Eagles took the lead again when Viktor Hertzberg scored in front of the net from Marc Bourgeois and Mathieu Brodeur at 14:48.

The Screaming Eagles dominated in the second period. The physical play also stepped up as the Screaming Eagles' Myles Micallef squared off against Juniors Chris Thorne after Thorne's hit on Jean-Sebastien Fournier at 10:43. Then, the Screaming Eagles would put up three goals within four minutes. It all started when center Nick MacNeil fired one past Juniors Jean-François Bérubé on the powerplay from Meilleur and Adam at 12:10. When the Juniors were shorthanded again, the Screaming Eagles added another goal on the powerplay when Horyl scored his second of the night from Meilleur and Adam at 14:41. Shortly after, the Screaming Eagles came back for more as Hertzberg also got his second of the night from Brodeur and MacIntosh at 16:05. That goal also concluded Bérubé's night as Jake Allen took over in net for the rest of the game.

Juniors forward Eliezer Sherbatov opened up the scoring in the third when he scored on the powerplay from Vincent Bourgeois at 1:02. The Screaming Eagles added to their lead when Micallef scored from the point at 8:10. That would be the final goal of the game as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles defeated the Montreal Juniors by the score of 6 to 2. The Juniors are now 7-5 while the Screaming Eagles improve to 6-4-1.

Montreal converted 1 of 5 on its powerplay chances while the Screaming Eagles were 2 of 6 on the powerplay.

Montreal netminders Jean-François Bérubé and Jake Allen made 18 saves and 9 saves. Cape Breton goaltender Olivier Roy stopped 21 of 23 shots and recorded the victory while Bérubé took the loss.

On October 16th, the Juniors will host the Quebec Remparts at 7:35pm, coached by former Montreal Canadien goaltender and Hall of Famer, Patrick Roy. Then, the Juniors will hit the road again as they will travel to Gatineau to face the Olympiques on Saturday, October 17th. The Juniors will play the Moncton Wildcats at home on October 21st, 2009.
