Cleveland Monsters News Release

CLEVELAND - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, defeated the Charlotte Checkers in overtime on Tuesday at The Q by a final score of 3-2. With the win, the Monsters extended their season's longest winning streak to six games and with a 33-27-3-4 record and a .545 points percentage, Cleveland surpassed Charlotte to claim fourth place alone in the AHL's Central Division standings.

In his 900th career AHL/NHL game, Monsters captain Ryan Craig staked his team to a 1-0 lead on Tuesday with a four-on-three power-play goal at 11:45 of the opening stanza, thanks to assists from Dean Kukan and Zac Dalpe. Charlotte's Aleksi Saarela tied the game at one, however, with a net-front redirection at 14:32 of the first period.

In the middle frame, the Checkers grabbed a 2-1 lead at 4:06 when Patrick Dwyer buried a transition score while shorthanded before a late-stage second-period Monsters power-play gave way to a Cleveland equalizer at 17:01 courtesy of a brilliant finish from Markus Hannikainen with Kukan and Daniel Zaar collecting assists on the play.

After the third period slid by scoreless, an overtime power-play opportunity panned out for Cleveland thanks to a game-winning Dalpe strike at 2:21 that materialized thanks to a pair of four-on-three feeds from Kukan and Sonny Milano. Monsters net-minder Anton Forsberg stopped 21 of the 23 pucks he faced to improve to 23-15-3 in net this season while Charlotte's Tom McCollum allowed three goals on 19 Cleveland shots to fall to 7-1-1.

Next up for the Monsters, it's a Thursday rematch vs. the Checkers with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 7:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
