St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL -- The St. John's IceCaps will partner with Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) to host a morning of workshops focused on safe driving best practices and the realities of distracted driving.
One hundred high school students from the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) will take part in the IBC 'Safe Driving Initiative' Saturday morning at Mile One Centre. The program will also include participation from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the NLESD.
"Distracted driving due to cell phones or substance abuse can have drastic consequences," said IceCaps President and CEO Danny Williams. "The IceCaps are proud to continue our partnership with IBC and help educate impressionable young minds on the severity of their actions while they're still in the early stages of getting their license."
Amanda Dean, Vice President, Atlantic, says IBC's partnership with the IceCaps is about raising awareness and helping keep families safe.
"Distracted driving can have devastating consequences, and cell phones are one of the most dangerous distractions for drivers," said Amanda Dean, Vice-President, Atlantic, IBC. "A driver who texts is 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident. With workshops like today's, we can work together to make our roads safer by raising awareness around the dangers of distracted driving."
The IceCaps will hold a ceremonial puck drop to acknowledge the program and will show video messaging throughout the game highlighting key messages the safe driving initiative.
IceCaps tickets are available and can be purchased in person at the Mile One Centre box office, by phone at 709-576-7657 or online at www.mileonecentre.com.
