December 17, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
ROSEMONT, IL - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, defeated the Chicago Wolves in overtime on Saturday at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL, by a final score of 2-1. With the win, the Monsters improved to 13-11-1-2 overall this season and with a .537 points percentage, currently sit alone in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
After a scoreless opening period, the Wolves claimed a 1-0 lead at 9:44 of the middle frame when Scooter Vaughan posted a sharp-angle, even strength goal from below the left circle. Cleveland responded at 12:56, however, when Alex Broadhurst set up Jaime Sifers for a right-point rocket that caromed in off the goalpost to tie the game at one entering the final frame.
After neither team was able to bury in the third, veteran defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron scalded a powerful slap shot past Chicago net-minder Pheonix Copley 55 seconds into overtime thanks to Broadhurst's second assist of the game to deliver Cleveland a 2-1 victory and an extension to the team's season-long six-game point streak. Saturday's game was the Monsters' fourth consecutive tilt decided in either overtime or a shootout and the fifth such game in Cleveland's past six contests.
Anton Forsberg improved to 9-6-1 in net for the Monsters by virtue of a 21-save performance, while Copley stopped all but one of the 22 pucks he faced in defeat to fall to 5-4-2 between the pipes for the Wolves so far this year.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Tuesday home clash vs. the Charlotte Checkers with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 7:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
