Monsters Claim Calder Cup with 1-0 Game Four
June 11, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - By virtue of a 1-0 overtime win over the Hershey Bears in Game 4 of the Calder Cup Finals on Saturday at The Q, the Lake Erie Monsters claimed their first Calder Cup in franchise history, Cleveland's tenth Calder Cup ever and first AHL Championship since 1964, in front of a sellout crowd of 19,665, the largest crowd in Monsters franchise history and the second-largest crowd in the 80-year history of the Calder Cup Playoffs.
After the first three periods slid by scoreless, Oliver Bjorkstrand buried his league-leading sixth game-winning goal of the playoffs with just 1.9 seconds remaining in OT, an even-strength marker, Bjorkstrand's AHL-best tenth marker of the postseason, on feeds from Lukas Sedlak and Zach Werenski. Following the game, Bjorkstrand was named as the winner of the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the AHL's playoff MVP.
Monsters goaltender Anton Forsberg capped the playoffs with a 23-save shutout performance to push his postseason record to a perfect 9-0 while Justin Peters made 32 stops in defeat for Hershey.
Join the Monsters at a Calder Cup celebration, Tuesday at 6:00 pm on Gateway Plaza with food and drinks, Monsters players and coaches, the Calder Cup and more!
