MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Manchester Monarchs fell to the Adirondack Thunder, 3-2, in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, despite a two-goal surge in the third period Wednesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

"We can't play 25 minutes of a hockey game and expect to win," Head Coach, Rich Seeley, said. "We know when we play our brand of hockey we will get the results we want. I expect to be much better Friday night."

The Thunder took an early lead just :43 seconds into the first period on Michael Kirkpatrick's 1st goal of the playoffs. Greg Wolfe skated down the right wing and found Kirkpatrick sliding into the slot where he beat Monarchs goaltender, Doug Carr, low stick-side for the early lead.

The Thunder extended their advantage on a power-play goal from Wolfe at 17:34 in the second period. Peter MacArthur sent a backhand pass across the slot after spinning with the puck in the right face-off circle, finding a wide-open Wolfe who sent a one-timer past Carr's glove, making the score, 2-0, Adirondack.

The Monarchs cut the lead in half on Mark Anthoine 1st goal of the playoffs at 4:24 in the third period. Maxim Kitsyn skated down to the right face-off dot and fed the puck to Anthoine who was crashing the net and Anthoine put in a backhanded shot past Thunder goaltender, Ken Appleby, making the score, 2-1, Thunder.

The Monarchs squared the game when Zac Larraza netted his 1st goal of the playoffs at 5:23 in the third period. Larraza took the puck on the right half-boards and circled toward the slot before firing a wrist shot past Appleby, tying the game, 2-2.

The Thunder would take the lead for good when Wolfe netted his second goal of the night at 18:27 in the third period. Wolfe took a pass from Ryan Lomberg in the left face-off circle, made a backhand-to-forehand move and sent a shot top-shelf past Carr to end the scoring.

The Monarchs return to the ice Friday night (7 p.m.) when they host the Thunder for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
