Real Maryland Monarchs News Release

Extra time was needed to settle this tightly contested match between top of the league PDL team, Reading United AC and Real Maryland FC of the USL's Second Division.

The home crowd of Reading made a lot of noise throughout the game and the home side started very bright with some early opportunities on the visitor's goal. Both teams felt each other out for the first 45mins, with Real Maryland unable to settle into their usual rhythm, thanks to the strong performance by Reading.

The teams went in at halftime 0-0, with the home side surely taking more positives than there visitors. Those positives carried over and early in the second half Reading went 1-0 up through a Schoenle diving header.

As the game wore on, Real Maryland was able to get the ball down and play football and started taking control of the game. In the 70th minute Real Maryland were awarded a free kick outside the Reading box which Nicki Paterson calmly placed passed the home team's goalkeeper.

1-1 was the score and the game was now headed into extra time. Both teams gave it their all, with the play going from end to end. In the first half of extra time, Real Maryland's Ben Hunter stepped up to deliver a quality cross into Reading's box which was headed home by Jyler Noviello. This made the score 2-1 and after some frantic moments at both ends of the field, it ended with a Real Maryland FC win.

The Monarchs now head to Richmond on Tuesday, June 22nd for the second round of the Cup. This should be a very tasty affair as Real Maryland has one of the best away records in the country right now and the two USL teams know each other very well from previous play earlier this year.
