Penn FC News Release
The Harrisburg City Islanders (1-5-4, 7 points) host the Richmond Kickers (4-3-3, 15 points) this coming Saturday, June 19 at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island in the second match between the teams this season.
The first meeting between these two squads was in the opening game for the 2010 season at University of Richmond Stadium where a highly competitive match left the game in a 2-2 draw. The Kickers sit just under the Charleston Battery (7-2-3, 24 points) in the standings, but got pummeled 4-1 this past weekend at Charleston's Blackbaud Stadium. The Islanders come off a 1-1 tie against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (1-3-5, 8 points) and try to climb from the bottom of the standings.
The Islanders hope to change some things this weekend.
After coming off an exhilarating come-from-behind 4-2 victory in US Open Cup play against the Brooklyn Italians Tuesday, Harrisburg hopes to keep the high momentum going into this weekend. Yet Richmond upset Crystal Palace Baltimore 1-0 in their US Open Cup match this week to also give them a boost before facing the Islanders.
Can Harrisburg finally notch that coveted second win?
The City Islanders take the field to face the Richmond Kickers Saturday, June 19 at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. Kick-off is at 7pm. There will be many opportunities to meet soccer players, receive autographs, and enjoy the soccer atmosphere on the Island. Then, Harrisburg hosts the second-round US Open Cup match against the Long Island Rough Riders Tuesday, June 22. The Islanders are also proud to announce an exhibition game against Major League Soccer affiliate the Philadelphia Union on Tuesday, July 27 at Skyline Sports Complex! US Open Cup Play for the Islanders Continues
With a hard-found 4-2 victory over the Brooklyn Italians Tuesday night, the Harrisburg City Islanders continue their run towards the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup championship.
Tension ran high on Skyline Sports Complex as late heroics kept the Islanders in the tournament.
The Harrisburg City Islanders relied on a dramatic come-from-behind plan to defeat the Brooklyn Italians 4-2. With the win they claim the first-round 2010 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup match and continue their championship hopes. But it didn't come easy.
A determined Brooklyn Italians squad didn't want to be taken lightly and they showed it. A spectacular lobbed shot from midfield by Marco Hamilton notched the first goal for the Italians and gave them a 1-0 lead before Nate Jafta sent a ball into the back of the net for Harrisburg tying the game 1-1. Then Paul Nittoli broke free from the Islanders defense and put the Italians up 2-1 going into the second half, but Harrisburg answered again with a rocket by Geoff Bloes to help even the score 2-2.
Then there was no turning back. In the first overtime J. T. Noone tallied another goal for Harrisburg for a 3-2 lead, then Dominic Oppong put the finishing touch on the Islanders victory scoring to push the result to 4-2.
Harrisburg's next match is against the Long Island Rough Riders. The Rough Riders blanked the New York Pancyprian Freedoms 2-0 in their opening match of the US Open Cup. It'll be Long Island versus the Harrisburg Islanders in the one game separating the teams from facing a Major League Soccer team in the third round, something Harrisburg has done before.
Can they get there again?
Harrisburg and 4 other USL-Division 2 squads eye the prize. The Richmond Kickers narrowly beat Crystal Palace Baltimore 1-0, the Real Maryland Monarchs squeaked by Reading United 2-1, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds shut-out Detroit United 2-0, and the Charleston Battery defeated CASL Elite 4-2. The Charlotte Eagles had their championship hopes ended by the Carolina Railhawks in a 1-0 match.
