Real Maryland Monarchs News Release

Silver Spring, MD - The Real Maryland Monarchs (2-3-5 11 pts.) will head down to Charlotte (4-3-2 14 pts.) this Saturday night for what hopes to be a more offensive showdown than the last meeting. In the two team's first meeting in Maryland, they finished 0-0. The Monarchs just narrowly missed the home win and 3 pts. when Jyler Noviello hit the post late in the game on a breakaway.

Charlotte is a different team without some of their recent retirees, but don't be fooled because they have had a recent resurgence of scoring led by Debola Ogunseye.

Earlier in the week, the United Soccer Leagues announced the USL Second Division Team of the Week, honoring Charlotte striker Debola Ogunseye as Player of the Week for his two-goal performance in the Eagles' 2-1 win against the Harrisburg City Islanders on Saturday, June 5.

On the same list for USL Second Division Team of the Week was Real Maryland FC's goalkeeper Brian Levey for his 6 saves in the shutout performance against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds this past weekend. Levey leads the league with games played accumulating 900 minutes, he leads the league in shutouts with 4, his save total of 49 doubles that of the next closest GK and holds a .9 GAA average.

When asked about his performance, the Monarch's keeper just sings the praises of the defense he has in front of him. "I am fortunate to have the guys I have in front of me," said Levey. "They make the game easier to read which allows me to do my job."

The Monarchs defense has played a tremendous role in keeping them just 3 points out of third place and only 5 points out of second place. Real Maryland FC was without Captain Gareth Evans last match against the Hounds due to card accumulation. The Center Back will join his mates John Borrajo, Mason Trafford and Kenneth Sola, who locked down the back in his absence last weekend, this week in Charlotte.

Real Maryland FC will also look to its play makers Nicki Paterson, Alan Sanchez and Ben Hunter as they try to continue to feed the forwards the ball and create offensive play. A new spark that may help the offense is recent addition of forward David Bulow. Bulow is a recent signing who played for the Richmond Kickers last year and was instrumental in their crowning as 2009 Champions.

Upon the Monarchs return, they get only a day of rest and then they head back out on the road to begin the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against Reading United AC located in Pennsylvania. Last year, the Monarchs were knocked out of the Cup in the Second Round by the Ocean City Barons in two OT's.

This year, Real Maryland FC will open up against a PDL team that is currently flying high in the standings. Reading currently sits in first place in the Mid-Atlantic Division with a record of 6-0-1 with 19 points while scoring 18 goals for and conceding only 2 against.

The Monarchs are coming off of three ties in a row and heading into the midway point of the USL Second Division's Season and the First Round of the U.S. Open Cup. The boys must continue to grind it out if they are going to find their stride to make a push in both the League and the Tournament.
