SPRINGFIELD, MA - The Manchester Monarchs tied the game late in the third period but fell to the Springfield Falcons, 2-1 in overtime, in Game 1 of the best-of-five 2013 Calder Cup Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at MassMutual Center on Saturday night.
The Falcons took a 1-0 series lead when right wing Cody Bass scored a goal at 10:36 of overtime. Defenseman David Savard kept the puck in the Monarchs zone at the right point and played the puck down to right wing Ryan Russell at the right wing half wall. Russell fired a centering pass for Bass at the top of the crease. Bass was able to tip the pass off his backhand and into the back of the net just past the outstretched Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones for his first goal of the playoffs.
Defenseman Blake Parlett opened the scoring in the game with a penalty shot at 10:25 of the second period. Parlett took a feed from a Falcons defenseman as he exited the penalty box. Parlett took the pass in stride and broke free on a breakaway. Parlett drew a penalty from a Monarchs defenseman as he took a backhand attempt on Jones resulting in a penalty shot. Parlett's penalty shot attempt came off the backhand and finished just over the blocker of Jones for his first goal of the playoffs.
Right wing Brian O'Neill ended Falcons netminder Curtis McElhinney's shutout bid at 11:11 of the third period with a goal. Center Andy Andreoff fed the puck to defenseman Nick Deslauriers at the right point. Deslauriers took a wrist shot that deflected off O'Neill's skate and into the back of the net for his first goal of the playoffs.
Jones (0-1) took his first loss of the playoffs making 28 saves on 29 shots in regulations and five-of-six shots in overtime. McElhinney (1-0) earned his first victory of the post-season stopping 27-of-28 shots faced in regulation and denying both shots faced in overtime.
Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Springfield went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
