Real Maryland Monarchs News Release
On what was a stormy day with a tornado watch in effect, the night proved to be a great night for soccer. The Monarchs and the Riverhounds finished 0-0 Sunday night in front of faithful crowd. The two teams both had stifling defenses that smothered any chances that were created. If anything got through the defense both keepers were up for the challenge. For what was the second time the two teams played one another, it ended without either team conceding a goal.
After both teams got their feet, Real Maryland FC pressed first with an opportunity in 22nd minute when #4 Mason Trafford got a header on goal, but Riverhound's Keeper Hunter Gilstrap was there to easily clean it up. The Monarchs didn't relent and in the 29th minute, midfielder Alan Sanchez took the ball left at the top of Pittsburgh's box shot back across right, but Gilstrap was able to make the save.
Pittsburgh was able to get numbers back behind the ball for a solid defense for most of the first half frustrating Real Maryland and then was able to create some chances of their own. In the 30th minute, #7 Tommy Gray nailed a free kick that forced the Monarch's keeper Brian Levey to make a diving save.
Early in the second half, Pittsburgh kept up the pressure and narrowly missed the goal when a loose ball was cleaned up by #20 Chad Severs. Keeper Brian Levey made the challenge and the ball narrowly went wide missing the right post.
Through the 63rd and 64th minutes the two teams exchanged flighted balls in from the flanks, but both keepers were able to snag the ball out of the air for saves.
Pressing again, Ben Hunter of the Monarchs put on some cheeky moves to get a cross into the back bar where a diving #10 Joel Senior just missed a header as the ball sailed by the post. In what was the best opportunity of the night for Real Maryland, was moments later in the 72nd minute when the ball was slid into the middle where #4 Mason Trafford hit a one-timer to the right side of the goal. Gilstrap was there again diving to his left knocking the ball over the cross bar.
As the game began to wind down, most of the pressure was seen in the Monarch's defensive end trying to hold off a Pittsburgh attack. Net minder Brian Levey came up big with a couple of saves off the goal line in the 75th minute. Just one minute later, Levey was called on again to make a big stop from a 25 yard shot from the Hound's #21 Harada where the ball was pushed over the crossbar.
The Monarchs and Riverhounds each picked up a point on the night. One major factor was that Real Maryland was playing without defensive center Captain Gareth Evans who was out due to card accumulation.
The next opponent for the Real Maryland FC Monarchs (2-3-5 11 pts.) will be the Charlotte Eagles (4-3-2 14 pts.). A win would put the Monarchs into a tie for 3rd place. Immediately following the Regular Season match, the Monarchs will head to Reading, Pennsylvania that week where they will open up the first round of the U.S. Open Cup Tournament against Reading United A.C.
