Mogues Leads Vermont Past Newport, 2-1

July 22, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release

NEWPORT, R.I.- The Vermont Mountaineers scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on Friday night, and it was enough to get past the Newport Gulls, as Vermont topped the Gulls 2-1 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.

Mountaineers starter Sam Bordner (Baltimore, Ohio/Louisville) pitched a gem, going eight innings and giving up just one run on seven hits. Bordner walked one batter and struck out five.

Designated Hitter Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall) was the lone source of offensive production for the Mountaineers, as he ripped a two-run home run in the first. The homer scored Will Morgan, who doubled earlier in the inning. That was all the 'Neers got from their bats, but it was all they needed, as the Gulls scored only once in the eighth inning.

Stephen Scott (Cary, N.C. / Vanderbilt) put Newport on the board with an RBI groundout, scoring Cole Fabio from third.

Newport started Blake Battenfield (Claremore, Okla./Oklahoma State), who pitched five innings giving up two runs on nine hits.

The Gulls had a scoring chance in the sixth inning, when they put runners on second and third base with one out. Bordner retired the next two consecutive batters, though, to get out of the inning.

Vermont got an inning of relief out of Jon Stiever (Cedarburg, Wis./Indiana), who allowed no runs on just one hit. Stiever picked up his first save of the season.

Borner got the win, moving him to 3-1 on the summer. Battenfield suffered the loss for the Gulls.

The Mountaineers improve to 16-18 on the season. Vermont will be in action again on Saturday night when they'll go to Old Mountain Field in South Kingston, R.I to take on the Ocean State Waves. The game is the second meeting between the two teams this season. The Waves got the best of Vermont in their first matchup, beating them 5-4. Saturday's game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
