MLS Hires Five-Time MLS Cup Champion Jeff Agoos as Technical Director, Competition

NEW YORK (Monday, March 28, 2011) - Major League Soccer has hired five-time MLS Cup Champion and National Soccer Hall of Famer Jeff Agoos as Technical Director, Competition. Agoos was named an All-Star nine times in his 10-year, 244-game career as an MLS player, representing three clubs - D.C. United, San Jose Earthquakes and New York (then-MetroStars). Beginning in January 2007, Agoos worked for the New York Red Bulls as Technical Director, then Sporting Director.
In his new position with MLS, Agoos will work with Nelson RodrÃÂguez, Executive Vice President of Competition and Game Operations on the planning and implementation of on-and-off field competition strategies.
"We consider ourselves fortunate to be adding a person of Jeff's caliber to our team," RodrÃÂguez said. "His vast playing experience and recent time in the front office of an MLS club make him the ideal person to help us plan and execute the next stage of development for the League's competition."
As MLS Technical Director, Agoos' responsibilities will include:
* Oversee an annual League-wide technical assessment that includes suggestions for improving the play * Interface daily with club technical departments * Assist in preparation and execution of MLS Technical Committee meetings * Aid in maintaining positive, productive relationships with CONCACAF, U.S. Soccer, the Canadian Soccer Association, and other soccer organizations * Serve as an MLS spokesperson on competition matters * Participate in game monitoring as part of MLS Matchday Central (see below)
Agoos and Colorado Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan are the only two players in MLS history to have won MLS Cup five times. Only Agoos has been on the field for each title game, winning with D.C. United (1996, 1997 and 1999) and the San Jose Earthquakes (2001, 2003). Agoos was a 9-time selection for the MLS All-Star Game and was selected to the MLS Best XI on three occasions, and to the League's "All-Time Best XI," awarded to commemorate the 10th anniversary in 2005. Agoos won MLS Defender of the Year honors in 2001, and his 244 league appearances (237 as a starter) are tied for 32nd-most all-time. He was also a member of the U.S. national team for the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups. Agoos represented the United States at every level and is currently second in all-time appearances with 134.

MLS Matchday Central As MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced on his March 11 First Kick conference call, a team of League and federation officials gather during each MLS matchday at the digital offices in New York. This new hub, known as MLS Matchday Central, will help integrate multiple departments at MLS with its clubs, U.S. Soccer, and the Canadian Soccer Association, and allow for timely response to any issues that arise during games.
