MLS Disciplinary Committee Suspends and Fines Cháves and Birchall; Fines Yallop

NEW YORK - The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee today suspended Chicago Fire forward Diego Cháves for one game and fined him $250 for his reckless challenge that endangered the safety of his opponent in the 91st minute of the match against the LA Galaxy on July 9, 2011. Cháves will serve his suspension during the Fire's game against the Portland Timbers on Saturday, July 16 at Toyota Park.

The Disciplinary Committee also suspended LA Galaxy midfielder Chris Birchall two games and fined him $500 for a challenge that showed utter disregard for his opponent's safety in the 92nd minute of the game against Chicago on July 9. Birchall will serve his suspension Wednesday, July 20 when the Galaxy host the Columbus Crew and Saturday, July 30 at Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

The Disciplinary Committee also fined San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop $500 for conduct unbecoming of a professional during the game against Philadelphia Union on July 9. This fine is added to his automatic one-game suspension and $500 fine for being dismissed from the sideline by the referee. Yallop's total fine is $1,000; he will not be permitted to be on the sideline or in communication with the bench during the Earthquakes game against the Columbus Crew on July 16.
