FRISCO, Texas (Tuesday, July 12, 2011) - Real Salt Lake saw its run in the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup ended at the hands of FC Dallas this evening, as the Texas side used goals from defenders Jair Benitez and Jackson Goncalves to post a 2-0 victory over RSL in their Quarterfinal Round affair at Pizza Hut Park. With the loss, RSL is eliminated from the 98th edition of U.S. Soccer's national championship, this after qualifying for the tournament proper for the first time since the 2006 campaign.
After Real Salt Lake controlled the balance of play in their league encounter just three days ago at Rio Tinto Stadium, it was FC Dallas taking similar control this evening at Pizza Hut Park, outshooting RSL 7-1 in the first half en route to a 1-0 lead at the break. The Dallas advantage would come via a dead ball opportunity by Benitez, who curled a 30-yard free kick straight out from goal into the upper right corner and past diving RSL GK Kyle Reynish in the 18th minute.
Real Salt Lake would come out of the locker room with renewed energy, and came close to leveling the match in the 54th minute when FW Fabian EspÃndola's left-footed bender for the far left post missed a foot wide. Right off the ensuing goal kick it was Jackson running onto FW Eric Alexander's flick-on header and past the last RSL defender before sending a perfectly-weighted chip over Reynish and under the crossbar to double the Hoops' lead at 2-0. From there the home side would effectively put a chokehold on the contest, with RSL MF Collen Warner's audacious volley from the edge of the area that struck off the crossbar in the 74th minute counting as the visitors' best chance to mount a comeback.
