Mizzi leads Rockford past PrairieThunder

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Preston Mizzi scored a hat trick to lead the Rockford Icehogs to a 6-1 Western Conference victory over the Bloomington PrairieThunder in United Hockey League action before 2,640 people Wednesday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

Mizzi scored his first goal 56 seconds into the game to send the IceHogs on their way. He was assisted by Jason Notermann and Nathan Lutz. The victory moved Rockford's record to 26-16-4, while the PrairieThunder dropped to 13-32-2.

Matt Gens gave Rockford a 2-0 lead at the 14:02 mark of the first period on a power play goal off an assist from Bryce Cockburn. The IceHogs went ahead 3-0 at the 4:51 mark on Mizzi's second goal, which was unassisted.

Trevor Baker scored Bloomington's lone goal on a power play with 53 seconds remaining in the first period off assists by John Spoltore and Tyler Rennette. Mike Doyle scored the only goal in the second period to give Rockford a 4-1 cushion. Erick Lion had the assist.

Mizzi and Corey Hessler scored goals in the third period for the IceHogs. Jason Ralph and Notermann assisted on Mizzi's goal, while Mike Letizia and Jesse Bennefield had assists on Hessler's power play goal.

The PrairieThunder, which was outshot 26-22, returns to action Friday with a Western Conference game against Quad City at 7:05 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
