Madison Capitols News Release
Madison Capitols blueliner Luke Mittelstadt was named the USHL's Defenseman of the Week for the fourth and final time this season after his Clark Cup Finals performance.
Mittelstadt netted a trio of power play goals in the series to bring his postseason total to five goals. That led all defensemen for the playoffs in lamp lighters. The defenseman finished the 2022 postseason with nine points. Just a point off the playoff lead for blueliners which was held by his linemate, Ben Dexheimer.
All three of the Minnesota commit's goals came at huge times for the Capitols. His tally in Game 1 would hang on to be the game winner in a 3-2 contest while his goal in game 3 tied things up at 1-1 after the Capitols went down 1-0 early. Trailing 1-0 late in the 3rd period, with the season on the line in a Game 4 goalie battle, Mittelstadt buried the equalizer with 5:59 left in regulation to help force OT.
The Eden Prairie, Minnesota native finished the regular season with 55 points (19G, 36A), which ranked 3rd among all USHL blueliners. His 13 power play goals was good for 5th in USHL among all skaters. Mittelstadt previously garnered Defenseman of the Week awards in weeks 5, 20 and 29. No other defenseman won the weekly award more than him. The accolade is the 9th time a Capitols player nabbed weekly USHL honors, which sets a team record for a single season.
