Elmira Pioneers News Release
Back to back HR's in the 6th inning and a grand-slam that was taken away in the 7th inning highlighted an intense contest Saturday night at Dunn Field in Elmira, NY.
Pedro Quero broke up a 3-3 tie in the 6th inning with a solo bomb to straight-away CF off Brockton starter Mike Marchesano (0-1). Rafael Alvarez followed one pitch later with a shot to RF for Elmira's first HR's of the season.
Brockton loaded the bases in the top of the 7th inning against reliever Chris Brown. Brought in to face lefty Chris Vasquez, Donnie Thomas surrendered a deep drive to right-field that was initially ruled a grand-slam by 1B umpire Brian Abraham. But after RF Rod Smith and manager Mitch Lyden protested Abraham consulted with home-plate umpire Carmen Perotti who ruled the deep drive was indeed foul. Brockton veteran manager Ed Nottle vehemently argued the call but remained in the game. When play finally resumed Vasquez struck-out and was immediately ejected by Perotti for continuing to argue the contraversial foul-ball.
The Rox stranded 12 runners on base as they outhit the Pioneers 11-7.
Both teams stand at 1-1 and resume the series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 with Pioneer RHP Eric Estes going up against Brockton RHP Mike Fischer.
