Newark, NJ â Saturday, May 25, 2002 â The Newark Bears took game two of the three game series with the Nashua Pride by a score of 10-2 to extend their current winning streak to four games. With the victory, Newark improves their Atlantic League best record to 13-6 and maintains at least a three game lead in the South Division over the Camden Riversharks.
A 2-2 tie after six innings was finally blown open in the seventh and eighth as the Bears put up four runs in each of those innings. Both Jimmy Hurst and Pito Ramirez went deep to left field to give Newark reliever Matt Weimer (1-0) his first win of the season. Weimer entered the game in the seventh and went the final three innings without allowing a hit and giving up just one walk. Anthony Shelby, who began the game for Newark, also had a strong outing, as he went six innings and only allowed two runs on eight hits while picking up five strikeouts.
Trevor Enders (0-1) who pitched two innings of relief took the loss despite only allowing one run without giving up a hit. Nashua Manager Butch Hobson called on six different pitchers and one outfielder, Juan Rodriguez, to stifle Newark's offense. Chad Fonville, Milt Cuyler, and Lance Johnson each had two hits for the Pride on the evening.
The Newark Bears and the Nashua Pride will play game three of this three game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 p.m. Sunday's 1:35 pm start will be an Outback Steakhouse Kid's Day. Tickets are still available by calling 973.483.6900 or through any Ticketmaster outlet in the tri-state area.
