Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current, Sask. - Eight different players scored for the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night in an 8-4 Broncos win over the Medicine Hat Tigers, moving the Broncos closer to a Central Division banner.
While the Tigers opened the scoring, thanks to Tomas Mrsic, Broncos Interim Head Coach Taras McEwen said he was still pleased with his team at that point.
"Obviously outshot them and we were generating chances," he said. "Just a tough breakdown, the d-man falls over to get the odd man rush, but yeah, I liked how we responded We stayed with it."
Luke Mistelbacher scored on the powerplay to tie the game for his first of five points on the night, and that's as close as the Tigers would be the rest of the way. Tyson Galloway gave the Broncos their first lead about 13 minutes into the third period and they wouldn't look back after that. Owen Pickering added one more in the first to make it 3-1 after 20 minutes.
Brady Birnie made it 4-1 early in the second period and it was responded by Mrsic to make it 4-2 before Rylan Gould made it 5-2 after the second.
Things started to take a wild turn in the third as Clarke Caswell and Ty Coupland made it 7-2 at one point before the teams traded goals the rest of the way as Kadon McCann and Rhett Parsons scored for Medicine Hat, while Ryan McCleary added a shorthanded goal.
In the midst of all that, there were more penalties in the third period that the rest of the game combined as tempers flared.
McEwen said that while the team gave up four goals in the game, they did hold a very potent offence to two goals most of the way.
"As long as we're able to get on top and have numbers back, I think their team that generates a lot of the rush," McEwen said. "And I thought we did a good job controlling that for the most part and having guys back and trying to kill players early."
Reid Dyck stopped 31 of 35 shots, including 19 of 21 in the third period for his 24th win of the season, while the Broncos powerplay was 3-for-6 and the penalty kill was 1-for-2.
On top of Mistelbacher's five-point night, Pickering had four points, while four other players had multiple points in the game.
The two teams will battle on Saturday night in Medicine Hat.
