Mississauga shuts out Whalers

Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Brandon Maxwell sure knows how to bounce back after a tough loss.
After being chased from the net when he allowed five goals on eleven shots on Friday night in Sarnia, the newest member of the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors made a 24 save performance to shut out the number three CHL ranked Plymouth Whalers 2-0.
Mika Partanen and Eric Diodati each scored on the power play for the Majors, who halted a three game losing skid and seven-game Whalers win streak. With a record of 19-17-1-5 and 44 points through 42 games this season, the eighth place Majors and fourth place Barrie Colts are separated by just three points in the Eastern Conference standings.
Majors General Manager/Head Coach James Boyd wasn't just impressed by the play of his goaltender Maxwell, but that of the entire team and how they rebounded after a less than desirable start to the weekend.
"That was probably the best game we've played all season," Boyd said. "Last night we got pounded, but full credit to the guys they really bounced back tonight.
"We got contributions from everybody in the lineup and Maxwell was outstanding. That is a very good team we beat and we were good right from the opening faceoff and did a lot of good things tonight."
Partanen opened the scoring just over midway through the first period on the power play from Trevor Carrick and Dylan DeMelo for his eighth goal of the season at 11:13.
It would hold up as the only goal of the game until Diodati cashed in on the power play for the Majors with his second OHL goal ? his first on the power play ? to give his team the 2-0 lead from Riley Brace and Kristoff Kontos at 5:41. Diodati has now scored in back to back games after notching his first career OHL goal on Friday night in Sarnia.
The Majors power play finished 2-for-3 on the night, while the Whalers were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Maxwell stopped all 24 shots he faced for his first shutout as a member of the Majors, and the fourth of his OHL career. Matt Mahalak surrendered two goals on 26 shots and took the loss in goal for the Whalers.
The Majors finish up their weekend swing tomorrow afternoon when they face the Saginaw Spirit at 4 p.m., then return to the road on Wednesday, January 18th to face Joseph Cramarossa, Jordan Mayer and the Belleville Bulls at 7:05 p.m. They return to the Hershey Centre on Friday, January 20th when they host the Brampton Battalion at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.ca, by phone at 905-502-7788, or by visiting the Hershey Centre box office.
