MISL's undefeated road team motors into Detroit

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The best team on the road tries to improve to 6-0 away from the Sears Centre Arena. The Chicago Storm head to the Motor City to face the Detroit Ignition on Friday, Jan. 11, at Compuware Arena.

Chicago (9-4) recently played to a 17-8 victory against the host California Cougars on Saturday, Jan. 5, in Stockton, Calif. The win comes off the heels of a heartbreaking 16-14 home loss to La Raza de Monterrey on Friday, Jan. 4.

"We tend to come out very strong, it seems, like we're up against it," Storm head coach Steve Morris said of Chicago's road success. "Maybe that's the mentality that we carry away from home that we need to bring to our home."

Former Ignition forward Carlos "Chile" Farias makes his first trip to Detroit since joining the Storm at the start of the 2007-08 season. Through Wednesday, Farias is tied for eighth in the league with 31 points on 11 goals (two three-pointers) and seven assists in 13 matches.

In the last meeting Dec. 22, 2007, the Ignition (9-4) toppled the Storm, 25-7, at the Sears Centre. Chicago's next home match is Jan. 18 against the Philadelphia KiXX. That match, which starts at 7 p.m., broadcasts live on Fox Soccer Channel.

STORM UPDATE

- Points leaders: Through Wednesday, two Storm players are in the MISL top 20 in points. Carlos "Chile" Farias is tied for eighth in the league with 31 points, garnering 11 goals and seven assists in 13 matches. Stephen Armstrong moved up to a tie for 18th place with 25 points. He has nine goals and two assists in 11 games.

- Triple threat: With Stephen Armstrong's two weekend three-pointers and Ian Bennett's triple against Monterrey, the Storm rank No. 1 in the MISL through Wednesday in three-point goals with 12. Armstrong leads the league with five three-point goals.

- Thwarting California: Storm goalkeeper Jim Larkin gave Chicago a lift with an 18-save performance during the team's 17-8 victory against the host California Cougars. The match marked Larkin's 200th career regular-season indoor start. Larkin (3-1) holds the Storm record with 20 saves in a March 18, 2007, match against ... the Cougars.

IGNITION UPDATE

- Chicago ties: Detroit goalkeeper Danny Waltman started his MISL career with the Chicago Storm. Waltman was named to the 2005 MISL All-Rookie Team after posting an 18-18 record in his rookie season with Chicago. Currently, Waltman is tied for the league lead among goalkeepers with seven wins. ... Ignition defenseman Matt Johnson played for the Storm in 2005-06. In 20 games, he posted five points and 10 blocks.

- Callahan garners award: Droo Callahan earned MISL Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week ending Jan. 6. He leads the Ignition with 27 blocks and he has won the top defensive honor three times this season.

- Last match: On Dec. 22, 2007, at the Sears Centre, Detroit routed the Storm, 25-7. Ryan Mack scored three times on only four shots on goal. One goal was a three-pointer, and he assisted another for eight points. Ignition goalkeeper Danny Waltman made 14 saves.
