Last Week's Outings:
MILWAUKEE (Jan. 4, 2008) - Shaking off the effects of a sore hip, Greg Howes had two goals and an assist to help the Milwaukee Wave defeat the Philadelphia KiXX 12-10 on Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
Combined with losses by Detroit, Chicago and New Jersey the same night, Milwaukee climbed into a first-place tie in the Major Indoor Soccer League with those teams at 8-4, heading into a Saturday night game at the winless Orlando Sharks. California is just a half-game behind at 7-4.
Troy Dusosky added two goals, including the game-winner, and the Wave surrendered 10 or fewer points for the sixth consecutive game.
Milwaukee dominated the first quarter with a 13-2 shot on goal edge, but exited with just a 2-all tie. The Wave gained control of the game in the second quarter with a pair of power play goals, one a penalty kick by Howes and the second by Anthony Maher, on a rebound of a shot by Jonathan Santos. That made the score 10-4, but the KiXX would not go away. Goals by Anthony Donatelli, Pat Morris and Ryan Heins, the last with 8:17 remaining, pulled Philadelphia within 12-10.
Then the Wave had to survive two tremendous opportunities by the KiXX. With 5:09 left, a shorthanded chance beat Nick Vorberg but deflected off the inside of the far post. And with only 10 seconds remaining, Vorberg had to go high and gather in a header that was on target in a scrum in front of his net.
Wave coach Keith Tozer gave his team credit for battling without necessarily playing their best game. The team came into the game with a long list of injuries, and Jonathan Santos exited Friday's game in the fourth quarter with an elbow injury along the boards.
Milwaukee converted 3 of 4 power play opportunities and hammered 35 shots on goal. Vorberg made 13 saves.
Howes' output gives him 46 points, but he actually fell one point behind Monterrey's Dino Delevski in the MISL scoring chase. Delevski scored six points in La Raza's 16-14 win over Chicago on Friday.
ORLANDO (Jan. 5, 2008) - An undermanned Milwaukee Wave squad won its second game in 24 hours on Saturday night, holding off the determined Orlando Sharks 8-4 at Amway Arena in the first of a five-game road trip.
Orlando entered the game winless at 0-14 but rested, while the Wave flew in early Saturday after defeating Philadelphia 12-10 the night before. Not included on that flight were starting goalkeeper Nick Vorberg, leading scorer Greg Howes and forwards Giuliano Oliveiro and Anthony Maher. Rookie Deco also went out during the game, leaving Milwaukee to scratch for their points.
The Wave trailed 4-2 at halftime, but Lovelace Ackah tied it midway through the third period with his first goal of the season. Oral Bullen then scored his first of the year with 12:42 left in the game, and rookie Joe Di Buono clinched it with 2:37 remaining.
Troy Dusosky, who scored two goals on Friday, made a key defensive play Saturday. Goalkeeper Marcel Feenstra was called for tripping while the Wave were on the power play in the fourth quarter, and Dusosky donned the orange jersey and faced Micki Djerisilo on the penalty kick. Dusosky came off his line and blocked the shot, then remained in goal as the Wave killed off the penalty.
Rookie Deco collapsed on the field early in the third quarter and was taken to a local hospital for fluids and observation. He is expected to be OK.
Marcel Feenstra won for the second time in as many starts in goal to lift the Wave to 9-4, tied with Detroit atop the MISL standings. Chicago played late Saturday at California with a chance to also reach the 9-4.
Marcelo Fontana scored the Wave's other goal, a first-period score that came after Shawn Boney put Orlando on top just 27 seconds into the game.
Pele signs Harley-Davidson Bike for Wave
So why did Pele put an upside-down signature on the Milwaukee Wave of Kindness Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 XL?
Widely considered the greatest soccer player of all time, Pele was known for his dazzling bicycle kicks ... which require him to leap and flip himself upside down before whipping the ball over his head. So Pele made his legend upside down. It's only fitting the signature matches.
The signature was applied to the black side cover of the custom-painted 2008 Harley-Davidson on Saturday, Dec. 1, when Pele was in New Jersey for the home debut of the Major Indoor Soccer League expansion franchise New Jersey Ironmen. It joins those of Olympic gold medalist Bonnie Blair, Packers legends Fuzzy Thurston and Gilbert Brown and Wave coach Keith Tozer.
Raffle tickets will be sold all year long for the bike at Wave games and at www.milwaukeewave.com. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Signatures will be added throughout the winter and the Harley will appear at different venues throughout southeastern Wisconsin, as well as at all Wave games.
Proceeds will benefit Milwaukee Wave of Kindness, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing soccer among inner-city youth. Wave of Kindness provides clinics, camp scholarships, game tickets and other programs.
