Chicago Storm News Release

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - Storm head coach Steve Morris is pleased with the California win, but another big task awaits on the road against Detroit.

- Question: Saturday's win against California had to be one of the better matches of the season as far as the team combining aggressiveness with accuracy.

- Coach Morris: We've played some good games in this early part of the season. The last game against California was another solid road effort. What we're trying to do right now is try to figure out how we can duplicate the same sort of performance at home.

- Question: What is it about this team that has made it successful on the road? Is it a focus thing or a circumstantial situation after a tough loss?

- Coach Morris: I really don't know. I know that we have a lot of characters on our team and a lot of strong personalities. We tend to come out very strong, it seems, like we're up against it. Maybe that's the mentality that we carry away from home that we need to bring to our home.

- Question: Every single line against California seemed to contribute. There were no letdowns, Benny Chavolla got his first goal. Everybody chipped in.

- Coach Morris: The one thing about playing with a shortened roster early in the year is we've had to use some of our younger pieces and younger players. Benny's had a regular shift for a while now. Edgar (Rivera's) contributed with a few games, including a very difficult one on the road against Monterrey in a tough environment. Going on the road is not a problem with these guys. It's not a problem for our younger guys. We have strong characters, and I like our attitude when we're on the road.

- Question: We've talked frequently about the strength of goalkeepers Jeff Richey and Jim Larkin. In his fourth start of the season, Jim stepped in and provided that spark you referenced after Friday's loss to Monterrey.

- Coach Morris: I was pleased for Jim because he hasn't been playing recently. That doesn't mean he's not a starting goalkeeper. We had some unusual circumstances in the preseason with a marriage that kept him away in preseason weekend. Jeff Richey had some good moments coming into the season. We decided to start with Jeff because of that. But it could have very easily been Jim, as well.

- Question: The last Detroit game, which of course was a lopsided loss at home, the Ignition didn't have a huge amount of opportunities, but they capitalized on each one of their scoring chances. How do you try to defend them differently this time around?

- Coach Morris: We are not going to dwell on what happened a few weeks ago. We'll be a better team because of it. We realized they played awfully well that day. Maybe it wasn't as much as of what we did, but more of what they did.

- Question: Can you look at this last game and say that this could be a standard that if you play at that all-around level, you should succeed against just about anybody in the league?

- Coach Morris: No, not necessarily, because every game is different. Detroit is going to be a far different team than California. What might have been good enough in California on that particular day might not be good enough in Detroit. Or it might be plenty, I don't know. We take each game as it comes. Detroit's a different opponent with different characteristics. What we did last week was fantastic, but that's gone, and we're now focused on Detroit this week.

- Question: You guys played well shorthanded on the road, playing without John Ball and a few nagging injuries within the lineup.

- Coach Morris: We were disappointed with John reacting after the Monterrey game, and that put us further in a hole. But he's a veteran. As you always say, if you're done learning in this game, then you're over ... you're done. I think John will learn from that, and I was proud of the guys stepping up and picking up the slack, bailing out a teammate.

- Question: Will Randy Soderman be back (after having a baby girl)?

- Coach Morris: Randy will not play in Detroit. We hope to have him against Philadelphia the following week.

- Interview conducted by public and media relations director Charlie Corr.
