MISL names players of the week
January 29, 2007 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
MISL GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Jim Larkin, Chicago Storm
Jim Larkin was acquired by Chicago only months before the start of the season however four MISL Player of the Week honors won this season to date, demonstrate that it has not taken long for the Larkin's acquisition to pay dividends for the Storm. In yielding just five scores when facing 41 shots on goal in two games over the weekend - both on the road - Larkin continued his stellar season and positioned himself to capture his 18th career League Player of the Week award. Most stunning this past weekend, was the Storm's 6-2 win in Philadelphia against the first place KiXX before a crowd of 7,251 at the Wachovia Spectrum on Saturday. The Storm's defensive effort spearheaded by defenders like Gaston Pernia, who set a new team record for blocks (seven) in a single game, and the entire backline assisted Larkin in a night of near perfection. Were it not for an early second quarter two-point goal by KiXX All-MISL defender Pat Morris, Larkin would have finished the game with a clean scoresheet. Combined with a Wednesday win at California, and a gritty effort in a 10-4 loss to Baltimore at 1st Mariner Arena, in which Larkin surrendered just four two-point goals with little offensive backing, the Storm improved to 9-8, still having not fallen below a .500 winning percentage as a club this season. In addition to his regular goalkeeping duties, Larkin, who played last season with the California Cougars serves as both an assistant coach on the Storm, as well as the head coach of the club's developmental team, Tormenta. Larkin is a Virginia Commonwealth graduate and an Ontario, Canada native, who has appeared in three League All-Star Games in his MISL career.
MISL CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Troy Dusosky, Milwaukee Wave
Troy Dusosky continues to ravage opponents at both end of the floor as a leading two-way defender in the MISL and for the Milwaukee Wave in what continues to be one of Dusosky's best individual seasons in his 12-year career. In helping the Wave, his club for the past six seasons, to a pair of victories against the California Cougars, at the U.S. Cellular Arena on Friday, and at Stockton Arena on Saturday, Dusosky and his teammates lifted Milwaukee's record to 10-8, and their team into sole possession of third place in the Major Indoor Soccer League standings, just 1.5 games behind first-place Philadelphia (10-5). A native of Anoka, Minn., Dusosky, turned in his top individual performance of the weekend on Friday, when with the Wave trailing 10-5 to the Cougars, Troy scored three second half two-point goals, two coming off of restarts, and one assisted by his brother and fellow MISL standout, Todd, in Milwaukee's narrow 16-14 win. His final goal, which came after he'd been inserted as a sixth attacker, was scored off of an assist from midfielder Marcelo Fontana with just 45 seconds left in regulation and proved the game-winner. The MISL Defensive Player of the Month for November, Troy Dusosky also added a block in Friday's game and maintains the team-lead in that category with 22.
MISL CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jonathan Greenfield, Detroit Ignition
Jonathan Greenfield earns CO-MISL Defender of the Month honors for another solid weekend along the Ignition's backline in which the MISL expansion team that came within one goal of moving into first place in the standings on Sunday, as the Ignition, and Greenfield both continue to exceed expectations on a consistent basis. Greenfield, only a third-year player in the MISL, who had previous experience with the Milwaukee Wave before coming to Detroit, had already been named MISL Defensive Player of the Month for December. He gains this weekly honor, in large part, for a starring two-way performance in a 10-6 defeat of the Baltimore Blast on Saturday before 9,622 at Baltimore's 1st Mariner Arena. Leading 3-2 at half, the Ignition used a two-point goal by Greenfield at 3:21 of the third quarter to gain a 5-2 edge, then a three-point score past Blast goalkeeper Sagu just 3:09 later for the game-winning goal. Greenfield, also added four blocks Saturday, six in two games over the weekend, which also included a 9-8 edging by the KiXX. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Greenfield is a regular on the team's power play and penalty kill units.
MISL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brian Farber, California Cougars
Brian Farber's contributions to the Cougars offense this past week appear to be the next in a long line of high-water marks in the soccer career of the second-year midfielder. Last week's 13-point effort led all MISL scorers and earned Farber, a second-year who was part of the Cougars original roster last season, his first MISL Player of the Week accolade. With goals in all three California games during the week, Farber emerged with a two-goal night on Friday at Milwaukee in a tight game that resulted in a 16-14 loss for the Cougars. The weekend was highlighted by a hat trick, the first three-goal game of Farber's career which came on Saturday at Stockton Arena. Including Wednesday's loss to Chicago, Farber totaled six two-point goals, and one assist. Last season, Farber's top statistic may have been being one of a handful of players to see action in all 30 games. Before that, it was completing his college career at a PAC-10 school like Oregon State, where he earned all-league honors. Even further back, Farber became the all-time leading scorer at North Idaho College, where he set the all time points record (66), following a high school career in which he was named the Idaho High School Player of the Year in 2000. The 5-foot-8 midfielder from Sandpoint, Idaho, more than doubled his season-long goal totals last week, shooting from five to 11, to go along with four assists and four blocks.
