
MISL names players of the week

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Brett Phillips, St. Louis Steamers
Phillips stopped 29 of 35 shots as St. Louis captured its first two victories of the season with decisions over San Diego and Monterrey. The 35-year-old goalkeeper stopped 10 of 13 shots in the Steamers' 4-3 win over the Sockers at the San Diego Sports Arena on Nov. 5. He then stopped 19 of 22 Monterrey Tigres attempts in the Steamers' 4-3 win at the Savvis Center on Nov. 6. Overall, the Tampa, Fla., native is 2-1 in the 2004-05 season, with a 4.63 goals-against average that ranks fifth in the MISL. Phillips' .759 save percentage (44 of 58) ranks second in the League. He is also third among goalkeepers in minutes played (181:26). Phillips began his professional indoor soccer career with the Harrisburg Heat in the 1992-1993 season. He also helped the Baltimore Blast win the MISL Championship during the 2002-2003 season. Phillips was honored as the MISL's Goalkeeper of the Week once during the 2003-04 season (Feb. 23), and was named the MISL Goalkeeper of the Month in February.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Pat Morris, Philadelphia KiXX
Morris was instrumental in leading Philadelphia to a two-game sweep of the two-time defending MISL Champion Baltimore Blast. The three-time MISL All-Star and three-time All-MISL honoree totaled two goals and six blocks as the KiXX defeated their Eastern Division rival by scores of 8-7 (Nov. 5), and 6-5 (Nov. 6), to improve to 3-0. Morris scored single goals in each game, and had a season-high four blocks in Philadelphia's victory on Nov. 5. Through three games, the Philadelphia, Penn., native is tied for the MISL lead in blocks (nine), and is tied for 10th in points (six, five goals and one assist). The 27-year-old is in his sixth season with the KiXX. Morris was honored as the MISL's Defensive Player of the Week three times in the 2003-04 season (Dec. 29, Jan. 12, Feb. 9) and was also named the MISL Defensive Player of the Month on two occasions (Jan., Feb.). This week's Defensive Player of the Week award is Morris' second of 2004-05. He was previously honored on Oct. 25.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
John Barry Nusum, Philadelphia KiXX
Nusum was a major player in Philadelphia's two victories over Baltimore, as he totaled four goals and two assists in helping the KiXX improve to 3-0. The KiXX rookie, and native of Devonshire, Bermuda, had one goal and one assist in Philadelphia's 8-7 win at Baltimore's 1st Mariner Arena on Nov. 5. The next night (Nov. 6), Nusum scored the game-winner while also leading all scorers and earning his first MISL hat trick with three goals and one assist in the KiXX' 6-5 victory at Philadelphia's Wachovia Spectrum. The 23-year-old forward is tied for fifth-place in the MISL in points (seven). He is tied for the KiXX' lead in points (seven) and goals (five), and has been credited with two blocks. Nusum is the all-time leading scorer at Furman University (65 goals, 161 points). More recently, he's played soccer for the Atlanta Silverbacks (2002-2003) and the Toronto Lynx (2004) of the A-League.
