Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
CLEARWATER, FL (June 11, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle turned to the pitcher they have looked to all season long to help them get back on the winning track and once again Kevin Slowey came through as the Miracle snapped their three game losing streak. In the process they took over sole possession of first place, with a 4-0 victory over the Clearwater Threshers on Sunday afternoon at Bright House Networks Field.
Slowey was his usual dominant self and extended his consecutive scoreless streak to 20.0 innings by going 6.0 innings allowing just three hits while walking two and striking out five. The only hits he allowed were a one out single in the second to Brandon Florence, a one out single to Brian Sellier in the fourth and a lead off single to Brian Burgamy in the sixth. He allowed just one runner to second, Florence in the second. His league leading ERA dropped to an impressive 1.10.
The Miracle got Slowey all the run support he needed in the fourth inning. With one out Matt Tolbert singled to left and advanced to second on Garrett Guzman's infield single. The two then pulled off a double steal and Tolbert scored on a sac fly by Brock Peterson. Kyle Geiger then lined a single to left which scored Guzman to make it 2-0.
They tacked on two more in the fifth when Trevor Plouffe singled to left. He was balked to second and scored when Korey Feiner's ground ball was misplayed by first baseman Bryan Hansen. With one out Alexi Casilla singled Feiner to second and then Tolbert's single to right-center scored Feiner.
Ryan Callahan pitched the final 3.0 innings allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out four to earn his first save of the season. Peterson doubled in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, tying Casilla's streak for longest of 2006. Peterson has now also hit in 19 of 20 games.
The Miracle now lead the Lakeland Tigers by ½ game, who beat the Dunedin Blue Jays 4-0 on Sunday, and the Blue Jays by 1.0 game with seven remaining. The same two teams meet Monday night at Bright House Networks Field. The Miracle send RHP Danny Powers (2-0, 2.59) to the hill against Thresher LHP Derek Griffith (4-4, 3.73).
