Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
JUPITER, FL (August 31, 2016)- The Fort Myers Miracle closed out the road portion of their 2016 schedule by splitting a doubleheader with the Palm Beach Cardinals on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals rallied for a 5-2 victory in the opener before the Miracle rebounded to post a 1-0 win in the nightcap. Fort Myers finished the season series by winning 14 of the 18 games played against the Cardinals.
The Miracle took the early lead in the third inning of game one. With one out, Brian Navarreto doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Tanner English.
After the host Cardinals tied the score with a run in the bottom of the third on a two-out infield single by Danny Diekroeger, Fort Myers regained the lead in the fifth. Navarreto led off with a walk off of Cardinals reliever Will Anderson, and then scored on Brian Olson's double to center.
Palm Beach responded quickly once again as they scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. Juan Herrera tied the score with an RBI triple, and he then came in to score the go-ahead run on Casey Grayson's sacrifice fly. Dylan Tice's two-run double two batters later increased the Cardinals' advantage to 5-2.
Daniel Bard (1-2) picked up the win in relief for the Cardinals, while starter Miles Nordgren (1-5) took the loss for the Miracle. Landon Beck retired all six batters that he faced over the final two innings to record his sixth save of the season.
In the nightcap, the Miracle scored the only run of the game in the third inning. With one out, Sean Miller lined a double to left, and scored one out later on Christian Ibarra's double to center field.
Cody Stashak, Michael Theofanopoulos, and Nick Anderson combined on a three-hit shutout, with Theofanopoulos (2-3) earning the win by tossing one-and-two-thirds innings in relief. Anderson struck out the final two batters of the game with a runner on first to earn his ninth save of the season. Sandy Alcantara (0-4) suffered the hard-luck loss for the Cardinals as he tossed a complete-game three-hitter, striking out ten.
The Miracle (68-67, 34-32) will now return home on Thursday evening to close out the 2016 season with the first of a four-game series against the Bradenton Marauders. The first pitch on Thursday will be at 7:05 p.m., and Dereck Rodriguez (1-2) is scheduled to pitch for Fort Myers. Fans can listen to the broadcast of the game on www.miraclebaseball.com with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman. The pregame show begins at 6:45 p.m.
