Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
VERO BEACH, FL (July 29, 2006) - After watching the Vero Beach Dodgers win the last two games in the bottom of the ninth, the Fort Myers Miracle tightened their belts and hung on for a 3-1 come from behind victory on Saturday night at Holman Stadium, snapping their season tying long four game losing streak.
The Miracle, who improved to 18-16, were just 1-34 when trailing after seven innings and on Saturday night they trailed 1-0 in the top of the eighth. David Winfree and Brock Peterson took care of that. Winfree began the eighth with a solo blast over the center field wall, his fourth of the season. Peterson followed with a drive over the right field wall, his 13th of the season, to give the Miracle a 2-1 lead.
Not taking any chances the Miracle added an insurance run in the ninth. Caleb Moore led off with a double to right-center. Justin Arneson sacrificed him to third and Brandon Roberts followed with an RBI single to right, past a drawn in infield.
The bottom of the ninth got a little interesting for the Miracle. Reliever Chris Schutt began the inning by walking the lead off, man David Nicholson. Blake DeWitt came on to pinch hit and hit a come backer to Schutt. He got the lead runner at first, but Trevor Plouffe's throw to first was wide. Jamie Hoffman followed with a bloop single to left that put runners at first and second. Shane Justis followed with a come backer to Schutt. Once again Schutt got the runner at second, but as Plouffe went to transfer the ball from his glove to his hand for the throw to first, the ball flew out. With runners at first and third and two outs, Cory Dunlap, who hit the walk off homer on Thursday night came to the plate. Schutt jammed him and got him to bounce the ball back to the mound to end the game. Schutt worked two shutout innings of relief giving up one hit while striking out two to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Miracle starter Kyle Aselton and Dodger starter Adam Thomas battled for nearly six innings. Aselton made just one mistake, giving up a solo homer to Xavier Paul in the fourth, his 13th of the season, to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Aselton went 5.2 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking five and striking out seven.
Thomas, coming off of a 14 strike out performance five days prior against the Tampa Yankees, was sharp. He went 6.0 shutout innings allowing five hits while striking out nine.
The two teams combined for 15 homers in the four game series (nine by the Dodgers and six by the Miracle). Roberts and Winfree each finished the game 2-5 with an RBI.
The Miracle take Sunday off and return back to Hammond Stadium on Monday night to take on the Dunedin Blue Jays at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Anthony Swarzak (6-6, 3.50) to the hill. It is Potts' Sports Café Miracle Monday presented by WJPT 106.3 along with Miami Vice Night.
