Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

JUPITER, FL (August 17, 2006) – Rare is it that teams play a five game series in the Florida State League. It’s even rarer that someone sweeps a five game series, but the Fort Myers Miracle did exactly that as they swept the Jupiter Hammerheads in five games over four days capping it off with a 3-1 victory on Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The win was the ninth straight for the Miracle and coupled with the Clearwater Threshers loss to the St. Lucie Mets means the Miracle extend their lead in the Western Division to 2.5 games.

The Miracle got all the offense they needed in the fourth inning. Trevor Plouffe led off with an infield single to short and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop Carlos Piste. Plouffe went 2-4 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. With one out Brock Peterson singled to center which drove home Plouffe and gave the Miracle a 1-0 lead. With two outs Luke Hughes singled to left-center which put runners at first and second. Steve Tolleson and Jeff Christy followed with back-to-back RBI singles to finish the scoring for the Miracle.

Miracle starter Anthony Swarzak was strong once again strong going 6.0 shutout innings allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out four to earn his ninth win of the season.

The only run the Hammerheads scored came in the eighth. With two outs Miracle reliever Jeff Manship walked Dante Brinkley. J.T. Restko reached on a throwing error by Trevor Plouffe, which put runners at first and second. Brad McCann followed with a hard smash off of second baseman Steve Tolleson’s body that went into right field for an RBI single. Chris Schutt relieved Manship and he walked Brad Davis to load the bases. Schutt got Juan Figueroa to ground out to third to end the threat and the inning.

Schutt earned his seventh save of the season by retiring the side in the ninth. After a lead off infield single by Steve Gendron, in which he advanced to second on a throwing error by Tolleson,. Schutt got two strikeouts sandwiched around a ground out to end the game.

The Miracle began the nine game winning streak on August 9 and were 2.0 games out of first place going into play that night. They have picked up 4.5 games in that time and have just 18 games left in the season.

The Miracle take their nine game winning streak home for a seven game homestand beginning with a three game series against the Lakeland Tigers on Friday night. The Miracle send RHP Josh Hill (6-4, 5.24) to the mound. It is Happy Hour Friday presented by Budweiser Select, Shoeless Joe’s Sports Café and WXKB 103.9. It is also Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend Night presented by Travis Jewelers. One lucky lady will win a one carat diamond.
