Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
VERO BEACH, FL (July 28, 2006) - It was a walk off two run homer on Thursday night that did in the Fort Myers Miracle. On Friday night at Holman Stadium, the Miracle gave up two runs in the ninth, the last run scoring on a single by Drew Locke as the Miracle lost for a season tying high fourth straight time, 6-5.
In a game the Miracle led 5-1 after six, they took a one run lead into the ninth. Ryan Callahan gave up a lead off single to Xavier Paul. Ryder Mathias sacrificed him to second. Jamie Hoffman followed with a hard shot up the middle that second baseman Steve Tolleson nearly made a spectacular play on, but the ball went off his glove into shallow center and that allowed Paul to score and tie the game at five. Callahan then gave up a single to left to Blake DeWitt that sent Hoffman to third. The Miracle went to their bullpen for Danny Powers and on a 1-2 pitch, Drew Locke dunked a breaking ball into right-center that scored Hoffman for the game winner. Callahan went 2.0 innings of relief allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two in taking his fifth loss of the season.
The Miracle built up a lead against the Dodgers and the way starter Kyle Waldrop was dealing it looked like the Miracle would snap their three game losing streak. The Miracle got on the board in the first when David Winfree reached on an error by second baseman DeWitt. Winfree stole second and scored on Brock Peterson's RBI double.
Segio Pedroza tied it at one with a solo blast to right-center, his second of the season.
The Miracle put up a four spot in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead. With one out Trevor Plouffe singled to left. Winfree followed with a walk and Peterson singled home Plouffe to make it 2-1. Peterson finished 2-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Deacon Burns then slugged a three run homer to right, his third of the season.
Waldrop was cruising until the seventh. He gave up his second homer of the game to Pedroza, a solo shot to make it 5-2. With one out Paul doubled to left-center and Mathias, hitting .098 at the beginning of the game, doubled down the left field line that scored Paul. Hoffman followed with an RBI single to right that got the Dodgers to within one. Waldrop was removed and Callahan got the next two batters to get out of the inning. Waldrop went 6.1 innings allowing four runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series on Saturday night at Holman Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Kyle Aselton (5-3, 4.04) against Dodger RHP Adam Thomas (2-4, 2.85).
