Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - Drew Locke's 9th-inning single gave the Vero Beach Dodgers their season-high 4th straight win in a 6-5 decision over the Ft. Myers Miracle Friday night at Holman Stadium. Sergio Pedroza added two home runs before he was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the 8th inning. The Dodgers can sweep Ft. Myers in the series finale Saturday night at 7:00 PM. Trailing 5-4 entering the 9th, Xavier Paul led off with his third hit of the night. Ryder Mathias sacrificed him to second and Jamie Hoffmann singled him in to tie the score. Blake DeWitt then stroked a base hit down the third base line on a hit-and-run to put Hoffmann at third. Locke punched a 2-strike line drive to right-center that plated the winning run. Ft. Myers built a 5-1 lead through the first part of the game. Brock Peterson's RBI double in the first inning off Cory Wade made it 1-0. Wade settled down for the next three innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Trevor Plouffe singled and David Winfree walked. Peterson singled in a run and Deacon Burns launced a three-run homer for the 4-run lead. Until the 7th, Vero's only run was a 2nd-inning home run from Sergio Pedroza. He led off the 7th with another shot, his third in 12 games since his promotion of Low-A Columbus. Xavier Paul and Ryder Mathias smashed back-to-back doubles one out later to pull within two runs. Hoffmann singled to right and the ball was misplayed for an error that scored Mathias and brought the Dodgers within 5-4. The 4-game winning streak is the longest of the year for the Dodgers who had five 3-game streaks earlier in the season. Vero Beach has slugged eight home runs from six different players in the three-game series. For Saturday's finale, Adam Thomas (2-4, 2.85) starts for the Dodgers against Kyle Aselton (5-3, 4.04) for the Miracle.
