Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (May 23, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle starting pitching has carried them a long way this season, but for the past two nights they haven't done the job. Jose Mijares lasted just 2.1 innings and the Miracle were rocked 11-3 by the Brevard County Manatees on Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium.
Mijares struggled with his control for the second straight start and unlike five days ago, he couldn't pitch out of the jams he got himself into. In the first inning he walked two and gave up an RBI single to Steve Sollman that gave the Manatees a 1-0 lead.
He gave up another run in the second on two walks and two infield singles. Everything unraveled in the third. He was able to find the strike zone, but the ballpark couldn't hold his pitches. He gave up a one out double to C.J. Medlin and then a two run homer to Freddy Parejo, his third of the season. The very next batter Carlos Corporan hit his first homer of the season to make it 5-0. Mijares hit the next batter and was removed for Justin Jones. He hit the first batter he faced and one out later gave up an RBI single to Ryan Braun. Mijares went 2.1 innings allowing six runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out four as he fell to 0-4 on the season.
The Miracle offense didn't pack enough punch to come back from the deficit. They scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it 6-1 when Deacon Burns doubled with one out and advanced to third on a throwing error by the right fielder. Alexi Casilla knocked him home with a ground out.
The Manatees scored a run in the fourth on a two base error by Luke Hughes and an RBI single by Corporan to make it 7-1. The lone bright spot for the Miracle was a two run homer from Matt Tolbert in the bottom of the fourth, his second of the season, to make it 7-3, but that was as close as the Miracle would get.
The same two teams will play Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Colby Miller (0-1, 3.86) to the hill against Manatees RHP Josh Wahpepah (3-0, 1.57). It is Wayback Wednesday (1956) presented by WJGO 102.9. The game was originally scheduled to be on Sports Radio 770 ESPN, but will not be on due to the NBA game. Instead it can be heard on the Miracle web site at www.miraclebaseball.com.
