Miracle complete sweep, rock Yankees 9-4

FORT MYERS, FL (August 31, 2005) - The Fort Myers Miracle finished off a sweep of the Tampa Yankees behind the big bat of Scott Whitrock, winning 9-4 on Wednesday night at Hammond Stadium. They couldn't pick up a game on the Dunedin Blue Jays, who beat the Sarasota Reds 8-1, but did pick up a game on first place by virtue of the Lakeland Tigers 10-4 to Clearwater. The Blue Jays and Tigers are tied for first while the Miracle sit 1.5 games out of first.

It was the Whitrock show on Wednesday night. He hammered two homers and drove in six runs. In the second, with the Miracle trailing 1-0, Whitrock blasted a three run shot over the left-center field wall, his 14th homer of the season.

The Miracle scored a run in the fourth with two outs when Justin Arneson walked, went to second on Kyle Geiger's single and scored on Jose Leger's RBI single to right. They made it 5-1 in the fourth when Angelo Fermin tripled and scored on Matt Tolbert's two out infield single.

The Yankees made it interesting getting to within 5-4, scoring two runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh. Miracle starter Adam Harben loaded the bases on a walk and two singles and the gave up a two out, two run single to Ryan Haag to make it 5-3. Harben went six innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out three and earning his 10th win of the season. In the seventh, the Yankees got a run off of Kyle Edlich, who joined the team from the GCL on Tuesday. He walked the first two hitters he faced and with two outs gave up an RBI single to Mark Carroll. That was as close as the Yankees got.

The Miracle got their insurance runs in the eighth. Geiger led off with a double to left and scored on Leger's single. After Brock Peterson's infield single, Whitrock drove a three run homer over the right field wall for his second homer of the night and 15th of the season. He finished the night 2-4 with two homers and six RBI.

Geiger finished the night 3-4, extending his hitting streak to 12 games, with a double and two runs scored while Leger was 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Miracle now head to Ed Smith Stadium to take on the Sarasota Reds Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. It is the first of a four game series. The Miracle will send RHP Jay Rainville (4-2, 2.16) to the hill against Reds RHP Kyle Edens (8-3, 2.53).
