SARASOTA, FL (July 9, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle shutout the Sarasota Reds in three consecutive games earlier this season. It seems as though the Miracle are getting a taste of their own medicine as they were blanked for the second straight day by the Reds, 1-0 in game one of the double header at Ed Smith Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Game two was rained out.

In game one both starters went the distance, but it was James Avery of the Reds with the shutout. Avery retired the first 10 batters he faced before giving up a one out single in the fourth to former Red Brandon Roberts. The only threat the Miracle managed was in the fifth when Steve Tolleson and Deacon Burns recorded back-to-back singles. Korey Feiner, however, grounded into an inning ending double play. Avery went 7.0 innings allowing just four hits while striking out two.

Miracle starter Anthony Swarzak was nearly as dominating, but in the fourth with one out Tonys Gutierrez reached on an error when he hit a grounder off the glove of third baseman Trevor Plouffe. Jeremiah Piepkorn followed with a single that was smashed to third and took a bad hop that hit Plouffe in the forearm. With two outs Cody Strait roped a double off the left field wall that scored Gutierrez for the only run of the game. Swarzak went 6.0 innings allowing one unearned run on seven hits while striking out seven.

It was the second consecutive game the Miracle didn't have a base runner reach third as their scoreless streak reached 17 innings and Alexi Casilla's hitting streak was snapped at 13 as he went 0-3.

Game two never got underway as the rain fell just as the Reds took the field. That game will be made up as part of a double header the next time the Miracle come to Ed Smith Stadium, September 2. That double header will begin at 5:00 p.m. with both games scheduled for seven innings.

The Miracle head home to take on the Reds Monday night beginning at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Josh Hill (5-2, 5.79) to the mound against Reds RHP Jim Paduch (4-4, 4.83). It is Potts Sports Café Miracle Monday presented by WJPT 106.3.
