Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, FL (May 30, 2006) - Pitching is always a strength for the Fort Myers Miracle and for the most part during the 2006 season that has been the case. A bad week wasn't going to get the staff down and for the second straight game, they stepped up and blanked the Sarasota Reds this time 5-0 on Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium.

Colby Miller, making his third start of the season, as he tries to rehab his right shoulder, was spectacular. He went 6.0 innings allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out one. He needed just 67 pitches, 41 for strikes to stifle the Reds hitters. The only hits he allowed were a second inning single to Jeremiah Piepkorn and a lead off double in the fourth to Jay Garthwaite.

The offense was able to rough up the number one prospect in the Reds organization, Homer Bailey, for the second time this season. In the second Kevin West led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Matt Tolbert. The Miracle loaded the bases when Jeremy Pickrel walked. West scored on a passed ball and Trevor Plouffe singled to score Tolbert and make it 2-0.

The Miracle, who improved to a season best nine games over .500 at 30-21 and just one game out of first palce, got three more off of Bailey in the fifth. Alexi Casilla and Garrett Guzman led off with back-to-back singles. With two outs Tolbert doubled to score them both and Tolbert scored on Pickrel's double. Casilla finished the night a perfect 4-4 with a run scored.

The Miracle bullpen was solid once again. Chris Schutt worked a perfect seventh and got himself into some trouble in the eighth. With two outs and a man at first he gave up a single to Drew Anderson and walked Paul Janish to load the bases. Tim Lahey relieved Schutt and struck out Garthwaite to end the inning. Lahey earned the save by closing out the game with a perfect ninth.

The same two teams meet Wednesday night for the finale of the four game series at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Anthony Swarzak (2-3, 4.78) to the hill against Reds RHP Sam Lecure (2-6, 4.44). It is Wayback Wednesday (1981) presented by WJGO 102.9.
