Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, F.L. (July 16, 2008) - The difference in Wednesday's nights action for the Daytona Cubs turned out to be a couple of multi-hit and multi-run innings in a 4-2 series opening win over the Fort Myers Miracle at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Steve Singleton, who again provided most of the offense at the plate, finished a double shy of the cycle in a losing effort.
Singleton put the Miracle on the board one-out into the contest with a solo home run to right, his third of the season. Daytona responded just a half-inning later with a blast of their own as Tony Thomas led off with a single to center and came around on a two-run shot to left by Darwin Barney.
Two more runs in the Daytona fourth would be their final plate-crossings on the night which turned out to be the difference-makers. A lead-off walk surrendered to Ty Wright and single to left by Steve Clevenger set the table for Marquez Smith and Yusef Carter. After Smith's double to left brought in Wright, Carter's sacrifice-fly to left enabled Clevenger to race home with the Cubs last run.
Singleton, with three of the six Miracle hits, struck again in the sixth to help bring the Miracle back to within two. After his triple down the right-field line, a Wilson Ramos sacrifice-fly to right would bring him in with the final visitors run of the night. In each of the last four innings, including Ramos at the plate in the sixth, the Miracle had plenty of opportunities with both tying runs on in the seventh and eighth, to go along with the tying-run at the plate in the ninth, being unable to cash in.
Game two of the series fires off at 7:05 p.m. from Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Wednesday night. Things don't get any easier for the Miracle offense having to face LHP Rich Hill, on major league rehab assignment from Chicago. The Miracle will start RHP Deolis Guerra (9-4, 4.28). Thursday's game from Daytona can be heard live on the Miracle Baseball radio network, WMYR AM-1410 and WCNZ AM-1660, beginning at 6:50 p.m.
