Minnesota United Looks to End Spring Season on High Note
June 12, 2015 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
Minnesota United FC News Release
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Friday, June 12th, 2015) -- Minnesota United (3W-5T-1L, 14pts.) looks to remain undefeated at home throughout the Spring Season Saturday night at National Sports Center Stadium as it faces the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (2W-2T-5L, 8pts.) in the final game of the Spring. United is also celebrating Alan Willey Night along with a bittersweet farewell to fan-favorite Miguel Ibarra - who will be heading to Liga MX side Club León on a transfer. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. CDT - fans can catch all the action live on KSTC45-TV and ESPN3.
The Loons are out of contention for the Spring Season title race, but still have plenty to play for; the Fall Season is just around the corner and despite struggles closing matches late, Minnesota has gone seven matches unbeaten. Ultimately, the goal of every team in the North American Soccer League is to lift the league Championship trophy in November. To accomplish that, United needs to earn a place in the postseason by finishing in the top four places on the league table.
"We could have gotten better results [this spring], but after dealing with adversity and injuries early on and a lack of form, we've built each week and improved our quality of the soccer," said Minnesota United Head Coach Manny Lagos. "Ultimately how we feel will depend on how we do this weekend."
Minnesota is on the right path to earning a place in the fall playoffs-going unbeaten at home though four matches in the Spring Season and grinding out matches to pick up valuable points on the road. Currently sitting in fourth place with a game in hand over Carolina and even in points, the Loons are looking for three points against Fort Lauderdale in front of another fantastic and rowdy home crowd on Saturday.
Minnesota United will honor Minnesota soccer legend and U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Alan Willey. Willey had a historic career playing for the Minnesota Kicks and Strikers, and joined the Minnesota United broadcast team earlier this year.
