BLAINE, Minn. (Saturday, October 24th, 2015) -- An early goal got Minnesota United back to its winning ways, defeating the Atlanta Silverbacks 1-0 at NSC Stadium. Christian Ramirez scored his 12th goal of the season to get a full three points in front of the sellout crowd. With the win the Loons remain unbeaten at home during the Fall season with one home match remaining.
"You always want to finish the season strong," said United Head Coach Manny Lagos. "It was important for us to play well tonight. We had some very good moments, especially in the first half. It was a very solid, defensive game for us tonight and the guys were very disciplined which helped us get the result."
United started a very attack-minded lineup, looking to build confidence heading into the postseason. The Loons got off to a quick start creating chances in front of the Silverbacks' goal. Kalif Alhassan was a catalyst for United's attacking play, and drew a foul in the penalty area that gave his side a penalty kick. Team leading goal-scorer Christian Ramirez stepped up for the Loons in the 9th minute and beat the Atlanta goalkeeper to give his side the lead.
Possession became the focus for both teams as the match went on, each trying to gain an advantage and control the pace of play. Atlanta tried to take advantage of United's aggressive offense by trying to play on the counter. However, the speed of wingbacks Justin Davis and Kevin Venegas was able to contain the Silverbacks.
United goalkeeper Sammy Ndjock had a fairly quiet night in goal, but made a couple of key defensive plays to preserve United's lead. A low through ball had sneaked through the United defense as Atlanta forward Jaime Chávez was rushing on goal for a breakaway. The Cameroonian international came out of his goal to clear the ball away from Chávez, preserving Minnesota's 1-0 lead.
As the final whistle drew near, United had several chances to double its lead. Ramirez played a low cross to the top of the box where Ibson smashed a shot toward the top corner of the net, but Silverbacks goalkeeper Steward Ceus made a diving save to deny the Brazilian. Another chance came just before the final whistle as Venegas put in a cross on a counter attack. The ball slipped past midfielder Daniel Mendes and forward Pablo Campos, both of whom had an open shot at goal.
Ramirez' early penalty proved to be enough as the final whistle blew, and United emerged victorious in front of the hometown crowd.
United finishes off the regular season next weekend before starting its postseason campaign. The Loons will host the San Antonio Scorpions at NSC Stadium in Blaine for a 7 p.m. match on Saturday, October 31st. The game will also be Budweiser Fan Fest Night, with many special events and promotions to thank the fans for another incredible season.
