Minnesota United FC at Philadelphia Union Preview
March 29, 2024 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Minnesota United FC News Release
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Minnesota United is on the road this weekend, taking on one of the Eastern Conference's top teams of the past few seasons. Notably, both MNUFC and the Philadelphia Union are two of only five teams in MLS that remain unbeaten through six matchdays.
The Loons enter the Saturday afternoon contest off a semi-bye week away from league action. Last week, the first team hosted St. Patrick's Athletic in an international friendly, keeping players fresh while integrating new names into playing action. That 1-0 victory over the Irish squad looks to provide a consistent game-week fitness heading back into MLS regular-season matches. Minnesota also sees the return of six players that were on international duty, re-energizing the team ahead of Saturday.
Philadelphia recently captured a crucial 3-1 victory on the road at the Portland Timbers last week. Though the Union remain unbeaten following that win, it hasn't always been sunny for them, as the squad started the season with three straight draws. Historically, the Jim Curtin led team has defended their home quite well, where last season they held a 10-1-6 (W-L-D) record at Subaru Park, amassing 36 points and only succumbing to defeat once.
Both teams will look to fight to continue to remain unbeaten this weekend, setting up a strong Saturday afternoon bout between the Western and Eastern conference foes.
HEAD COACH ERIC RAMSAY ON THE PHILADELPHIA UNION...
"They're a really difficult team to play against, particularly at home. They're strong, physical, attack in a very direct way where the front two can really hurt teams very early. As I said earlier in the week, it's one for us where we need to stand up to the physical battle because that will be definitive as to how successful we are there. In some senses, it's a nice message to sell because I think if you can do that, then we'll inevitably get chances. We've got some very good players on the break, so we feel like it's a game that we can take something from. We've got to do the very basics of the game exceptionally well."
DEFENDER DJ TAYLOR ON WHAT STANDS OUT ABOUT THE PHILADELPHIA UNION...
"I think [the win at Portland Timbers] gave them some confidence with that result. But, they're a good club; they've won championships. I expect them to be very compact. I expect it to be a very tactical game. It's going to be hard to break them down. But, I believe in what we're doing and it will be a good test for us to continue to show that we're a number one team and we want to be the top of the table."
