Minnesota United FC News Release
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Thursday, February 12th, 2015) -- Minnesota United announced today that forward Christian Ramirez has re-signed with the team. Ramirez was named the NASL's Young Player of the Year and Golden Boot winner during the 2014 season.
"It's huge for the club, We are already a special club and this shows that we are continuing to build our current roster, and also for the future," said United Head Coach Manny Lagos. "It's another example of our ownership group giving us a vision about how we want to develop and grow as an organization and drive forward."
In 2014, United exercised its option on the young striker's contract after he had a breakout first season with the club. Ramirez led the League in goals and broke Minnesota's single season records for goals and assists with 20 and six respectively.
The new deal secures Ramirez through the 2017 season.
"Having Christian back for the next three years is outstanding," Lagos continued. "He is a great young person and an amazing player that has so much more to give. It's a great day for Minnesota soccer to have signed a player that has already done so much and will continue to develop and do so into the future."
Ramirez was excited when asked about signing the new contract and, according to the young striker, so is his family.
"It's really special for my parents," said Ramirez. "This is a sport that they shared with me and they have supported me for a very long time. I'm thankful that the club believes in me, and I just want to keep working hard and reward the club for believing in me. For me individually, this is a great place to keep growing as a pro, and that means a lot to me."
Ramirez was thrust into the role of main starting striker after a preseason injury took out teammate Pablo Campos. The California native made a big splash in the League, scoring in the 17th minute of the first match of the season with a fantastic spinning volley. It would be the first of many in an ever-growing list of highlight reel performances. This includes a bicycle kick goal against Indy Eleven that won Fox Sports Live's The 1.
