Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Thursday, February 12, 2015) - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced the return of veteran defender Iván Guerrero for the 2015 season. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Guerrero, 37, served as the Strikers captain for the 2014 season. The defender started all 29 of the Strikers regular season and postseason matches, leading his side to an eight-game unbeaten streak culminating in an appearance in The Championship Final.
"Over the past two seasons, Guerrero has shown that he is one of the premier defenders in the league," Strikers Head Coach Marcelo Neveleff said. "A leader and a professional on and off the field, he has commanded the respect of his teammates as well as the fans. We're excited to have back such an important member of the club."
Guerrero joined the Strikers in 2013 and has gone on to make 53 official appearances for the club, all starts. Dubbed the "Iron Man" by fans, the Strikers captain played 2,626 of a possible 2,640 minutes-the most of any NASL player-in 2014.
An attack-minded left back, Guerrero led the Strikers in assists in 2013 with six, and tallied three more in his second year with the club.
A former Honduras international, Guerrero earned 84 caps for his country, including 33 from FIFA World Cup Qualification matches. He was a member of three CONCACAF Gold Cup squads and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
Prior to joining the Strikers, Guerrero played in the Premier League, Major League Soccer, and the top flights in Honduras and Uruguay.
Guerrero began his professional career in Honduras in 1996 with Club Deportivo Motagua. He had three separate spells with the club and made over 200 appearances.
In MLS, Guerrero made appearances with Chicago Fire, San Jose Earthquakes and D.C. United. He won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2006 with Chicago and again in 2008 with D.C.
