Minnesota Magicians News Release
Divisional Playoffs - Round 1
Best of 5 Series: Fairbanks Leads 2-0
Player of the Week: Vaughan Ahrens (Below) - The rookie goaltender made 96 saves in two games in Fairbanks over the weekend.
Weekend Recap:
The Magicians made the long trip to Fairbanks, Alaska for the 2nd time this season to face off against the Ice Dogs in their first ever playoff appearance over the weekend. Playing in front of a sold out crowd of over 2,200 people at Big Dipper Ice Arena each night, the Magicians faced the tall order of trying to defeat the Midwest Division Champions in extremely hostile territory. Despite the adversity, however, the Magicians competed vigorously on Friday night, taking the game to overtime and coming within a cross bar of sending the Ice Dogs home with a Game-1 loss before ultimately falling in heartbreaking fashion. On Saturday, a physically and emotionally exhausted, road weary Magicians team was unable to muster any offense and overcome a slow start to the game. The end result of the weekend was a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-five series, meaning that the upcoming slate of games at Richfield Ice Arena is a do-or-die situation for the Red & Black.
Friday:
Final Score: Magicians 4 - Fairbanks 5 (OT)
Star of the Game: Lukas Laub - The veteran forward had two points in the game, assisting on Sam Becker's first period goal, and then tying the game in the 3rd period with an unassisted goal.
Venue: Big Dipper Ice Arena - Fairbanks, AK
