MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx today announced that they will team up with the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women (MCBW) and the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MNCASA) to host a Choose Respect Night in cooperation with Verizon Wireless.

Choose Respect Night, scheduled for the game between the Minnesota Lynx and the San Antonio Silver Stars on Sunday, August 19, at 5 p.m. at the Target Center, is the kickoff event for participating programs that are doing outreach activities with teens throughout Minnesota around healthy dating relationships.

Choose Respect is a campaign of the Centers for Disease Control to motivate adolescents ages 11-14 to challenge harmful beliefs about dating abuse and sexual violence and take steps to form respectful relationships.

"The Lynx are glad we have the opportunity to encourage the young people of our community to respect each other when dating," said Timberwolves and Lynx President Chris Wright. "We all have differences and unique character traits, but we should never condone violence or inappropriate behavior."

Verizon Wireless and the Minnesota Lynx will present a check for $5,000 to the Coalition prior to tip-off on August 19, to fund the second Verizon Wireless/Minnesota Lynx Teen Leadership Summit in the winter of 2008. At the Leadership Summit, selected youth from all over Minnesota will receive training on how to organize their peers and communities to end sexual assault and domestic violence.

"We are very appreciative of Verizon Wireless and the Minnesota Lynx's support of the Choose Respect Initiative," said Dresden Jones of MNCASA. "Verizon Wireless and the Lynx are investing in Minnesota's youth by supporting the development of respectful dating relationships."
